Helltrench was created under the name HellCirkus by Nikolai and Laurie on March 5th 2023, with Nikolai on vocals and Laurie on drums, later that same day Nikolai would take on guitar duties as such establishing their first official lineup. The band then changed their name to Forest of Hell due to Rio's violence and nature however due to it's length the band decided to change it and thus chose Helltrench.

Isolation was the band's first song, released on March 30th 2023 the track showed how they were experimenting with implementing different types of metal subgenres into their music. This early song was distributed digitally as an MP3 file, shortly after hearing the song Zeca joined the band, serving as their first bass player.

After Isolation the band took some time off, during this time many songs were written that would later be featured on Freedom is Slavery and Helltrench, and on June 2023 they officially started working on the album. On August 2023 Helltrench parted ways with Zeca Mattos, this departure was amicable, he did not contribute nor rehearse with the band during his tenure. Laurie took on backing vocals duties and rehearsals for Freedom is Slavery soon commenced on May 4th 2024. On September 28th 2024 Helltrench played their first concert with Zeca Mattos as a guest playing bass, Rafael Miranda recorded the show and also helped with preparations of the show as a roadie. In late 2024 the band decided that it would be a good idea to record an EP to have material to send in order to be able to play more concerts. Rafael would join on December 2024 as a rhythm guitarist/backing vocalist however this return did not last long as he stepped down from Helltrench soon after joining due to technical reasons. Recording for Helltrench's EP took place over the span of three days : 26th November, 29th December 2024 and January 25th 2025. The EP was released on January 28th 2025.
